1004 1976 - 1978     John Skirmont I was lucky enough to catch this Sheridan firing while on the move. Being a former Sheridan driver myself, I can tell you that there is a great deal of coordination required between the driver and gunner, as it was imperative that the driver keep the track moving very smooth and steady less the gunner miss the shot. Another very interesting thing about this photo is that the M551 is firing over the side. We tried to avoid this practice, as turret screens came loose and even cupola bolts sheared off as a result of the massive recoil. 2/NightFire03_jpg_jpg.jpg

994 1976 - 1978     John Skirmont Picture shows how a TPT (Target, Practice, Tracer) round was packed in the metal shipping containers. Notice the rubber boot around the rear of the round. Because M551 rounds were fired using an electrical charge in the breach instead of a conventional firing pin, this rubber boot prevented static electricity from igniting the round. I am standing on the right and Andrew Frosch (of Vermont) is the other person. During my three years with the Cav we often times did maneuver exercises on the economy and the German kids would hold up two fingers in the Victory or Peace sign depending on your interpretation. With the fall of East Germany, we felt it was appropriate to add the third finger. reunify.jpg

My Platoon Sergeant suggested we take the foto; it is in the classroom on the fourth floor of the barracks where we have been conducting gunnery classes prior to Level 1 the following month. 870 1979 WTA H Company Stefanowicz The 50 cal Telfare device set up for sub caliber tank gunnery training at WTA. As I recall, we did this twice, as the Squadron tried different ways to augment gunnery training. A non standard range fan was developed allowing the tanks to fire and maneuver from Area H moving north to the main tank trail which was closed off. Among the problems, getting the M2 to function in single shot mode and re - belting the ammunition to pure tracer.
