1975 | Mike McGehee | One of my better moments in 1975. The Troop F CO, CPT Buzz Rollins gave me his jeep for some sort of terrain problem, I promptly stuck got it stuck by Mellrichstadt. | mcGehee_m/Mike04.jpg | |

1976 - 1978 | John Skirmont | Scout trooper used for ammo detail. If you weren't an M551 crewman, this is usually where you ended up. It helped to have a good attitude as is evidenced by this troop. | 2/AmmoPoint01_jpg_jpg.jpg | |
1976 - 1978 | John Skirmont | Sheridans night firing from a stationary position on the firing line. The driver didn't have much to do here, and sometimes even caught up on some much needed sleep. Yes, we drivers did actually get used to the recoil enough to snooze! | 2/NightFire01_jpg_jpg.jpg | |
1976 - 1978 | John Skirmont | This picture shows some East German maintenance vehicles on their side of the border. Nice image of a tower, also. | 2/UPS4_jpg_jpg.jpg | |
1976 - 1978 | John Skirmont | A shot of the infamous "Barber Pole". | 2/Border06_jpg_jpg.jpg | |
1976 - 1978 | John Skirmont | In front of the arms room, drawing weapons, ammo and equipment for US Patrol duty. | 2/USPatrol01_jpg_jpg.jpg | |
1976 - 1978 | John Skirmont | Unknown Eaglehorse troopers at Lee from a German newspaper photo that has lost its caption. We used 1987 only to place the image, actual date is unknown. Anyone recognize these troopers?? | 2/BDRUNK_jpg_jpg.jpg | |
1976 - 1978 | John Skirmont | Another great view of the night fire line as a Sheridan cuts loose. | 2/NightFire02_jpg_jpg.jpg | |
1976 - 1978 | John Skirmont | I was lucky enough to catch this Sheridan firing while on the move. Being a former Sheridan driver myself, I can tell you that there is a great deal of coordination required between the driver and gunner, as it was imperative that the driver keep the track moving very smooth and steady less the gunner miss the shot. Another very interesting thing about this photo is that the M551 is firing over the side. We tried to avoid this practice, as turret screens came loose and even cupola bolts sheared off as a result of the massive recoil. | 2/NightFire03_jpg_jpg.jpg | |
1976 - 1978 | John Skirmont | While on US Patrol, we were routinely just a step away from the actual border. | 2/USP3_jpg_jpg.jpg | |
1976 - 1978 | John Skirmont | The gate that allowed traffic between the East/West German border in our sector. This was just where we turned off the road to get to OP Sierra. | 2/Border01_jpg_jpg.jpg | |
1976 - 1978 | John Skirmont | This is a picture of my crew, the "Fireball" Express". We had just come off of the line after qualifying Distinguished. This is a rare photo, as it shows the late SSG Hale (at far left, wearing the sunglasses). | 2/Crew_jpg_jpg.jpg | |
1976 - 1978 | John Skirmont | M551 crewmen uploading their Sheridan in preparation for a qualifying run. Notice the mud. The conditions could by hot and dusty one day, wet and miserable the next. | 2/AmmoPoint02_jpg_jpg.jpg | |
1976 - 1978 | John Skirmont | A shot of a familiar vehicle along the border trace. Can you name it? | 2/bdr5_jpg_jpg.jpg | |
1976 - 1978 | John Skirmont | View from the drivers compartment of a Sheridan while on a roadmarch. I can still smell the diesel fumes when I look at this picture! | 2/Rdmch1_jpg_jpg.jpg | |
1976 - 1978 | John Skirmont | Here's a nice view of the border as we have a chance to look across. | 2/Border04_jpg_jpg.jpg | |
1976 - 1978 | John Skirmont | A Sheridan and an M60A1 loaded on a train in preparation for an upcoming gunnery. Due to the heavier weight of the M60A1, only one was allowed per railcar. Two Sheridans could be loaded on one car, however. | 2/Rld1_jpg_jpg.jpg | |
1976 - 1978 | John Skirmont | Nice picture of six Sheridans firing at one time. | 2/Gunnery01_jpg_jpg.jpg | |
1976 - 1978 | John Skirmont | Sheridans secured on the hardstand. Remember the tarps? | 2/Tkprk1_jpg_jpg.jpg | |
1976 - 1978 | John Skirmont | Picture shows how a TPT (Target, Practice, Tracer) round was packed in the metal shipping containers. Notice the rubber boot around the rear of the round. Because M551 rounds were fired using an electrical charge in the breach instead of a conventional firing pin, this rubber boot prevented static electricity from igniting the round. The pointed end of the "big blue" is in the foreground, covered by part of the shipping material. | 2/AmmoPoint03_jpg_jpg.jpg | |
1976 - 1978 | John Skirmont | A view of OP Sierra. For 24 hours at a time, this was home to the troops assigned to monitor the activities of the Meiningen Gap sector of the East/West German border. East Germany is in the background. | 2/OPS_jpg_jpg.jpg | |
1976 - 1978 | John Skirmont | Maintenance didn't stop if you were away from Daley Barracks. This picture shows me (foreground) and a member of my crew cleaning the pack (engine) and engine compartment of our Sheridan while on a border tour. | 2/QService01_jpg_jpg.jpg | |
1976 - 1978 | John Skirmont | Getting ready to pull the pack during maintenance week, otherwise known as Q-Service (Quarterly Service). This was normally done while we were back at the barracks, between border tours and field exercises. | 2/QService02_jpg_jpg.jpg | |

1977 | Mike McGehee | This photo was taken by CPT Clint Ancker, Troop F Commander; a dramatic view of the Sheridan firing line at night with white light searchlight illuminating target as middle tank fires. | mcGehee_m/Mike09.jpg | |

1986 | Scott Myers | It is a picture of SGT Scott A. Myers (me) in 1986 I think, somewhere on maneuvers in the German countryside, I think it was Warsteed. Anyway, SGT Mark Flowers took this picture of me standing in front of my M3. | myers_s/staffs_1.JPG | |

1990 | Johnson, Chris | This picture comes with a short story. It was taken on 3 October 1990 in the former East Germany. I am standing on the right and Andrew Frosch (of Vermont) is the other person. During my three years with the Cav we often times did maneuver exercises on the economy and the German kids would hold up two fingers in the Victory or Peace sign depending on your interpretation. With the fall of East Germany, we felt it was appropriate to add the third finger. | reunify.jpg | |

The foto is a good approximation of the scale and detail of this feature if viewed with binoculars. The building has an interesting history dating from 1790 as a royal hunting lodge. During the cold war, it had been at times occupied by Soviets, DDR Border Troops and school children. From 1976 to end of Cold War, the building was shuttered. After Germany reunified, much effort was made by locals to restore the building as a part of the administration center for the " Bio - sphere Rhon " project. | mar1103_Mar7.jpg |

1976 | Camp Lee | Other | Ritter, Erwin | Wollbach re-named to Camp Lee 1976. This is a scan of a photo copy that Erwin Ritter sent. It was originally in the 2 June 1976 Main Post Wurzburg newspaper with a brief article in German noting the re-naming of Camp Wollbach to Camp Phillip L. Lee. The article gave a very brief overview of the border surveillance mission, the 2/11 ACR and the history behind the new name. It mentioned that Lt Lee's mother attended the re - naming ceremony as well as the Regimental Cdr, Col Ballantyne and the Camp OIC, identified as Lt Lee Allan. All three people are visible with backs to camera in the scan. | hold_f8_gif.jpg

As I recall, with Major Skidmore as the SXO, we actually managed to bring under control and into compliance almost all the loose money. After the beer distributor was paid, the pin ball contractor paid, the balance was carefully accounted for and plowed back into troop welfare items in the beer hall. We bought a pop corn machine as well as a commercial hot dog cooker. | hold_f14_jpg.jpg |
1978 | Camp Lee | Other | Stefanowicz, Bob | Barracks and New Dining Facility ..... the two barracks used by the majority of the troopers can be seen to the left. At right is the "new" dining facility, opened in Spring of 78. Col (R) Tartella informs me that the funding for the new building came primarily from the Germans; much of Camp Lee had an convoluted back story. The Camp was considered " real " property and accounted for by Schweifurt MILCOM so they had an interest in the physical plant. Because the barracks were pre-fab and "temporary" they, as well as most of the other buildings left over from the 14th ACR days, were also grouped as " sub standard ". USAREUR considered Camp Lee to be a "remote site" and therefore received some sort of special funding as well as an occasional visit from their representative. All told, it seemed to move forward, powered by reports of survey accounting for the damage to the sheet rock walls by the troops. As border officer, I came to realize that much of the job involved quality of life issues at the border camp. My border NCO was happy to abandon me to these tasks while he scouted the border trace. | hold_f13_jpg.jpg

In Erwin's photo, the Camp is setup for Friendship day, hence the white tent and all the additional cars and buses. If you look, at roughly 12 o 'clock, the hardstand and motor shop building, at 11 is the arms room, partially hidden by the trees, at 9, 8 and 7 are the three barracks buildings, blue in the earlier photo, sand tan in the later photo. Notice also the "stub out" additions at the ends of the buildings. The "new" ( at least as of 78 ) dining facility is seen just below the center of the clock; coming down the street from the hardstand, the roofs of the day room / learning center and operations center which also held the "old mess hall" are visible. The gate, guard building and ACR sign can also be seen. In both photos, the beer hall is hidden by the trees. | hold_f6_jpg.jpg |

| 158 | 1978 | Camp Lee | Other | Stefanowicz, Bob | What is notable is the " dual tex " style paint job on the tank. This style had been in a feature article in Armor mag as a possible replacement for the " Merdoc " (sic???)three color style we were more than familiar with. The TC, SSG Champion, asked me if he could do it as an experiment, I ran it up the chain and, again, much to my surprise, it was approved. I believe the tank was the only one in Rgt to feature this style ... it lasted until the next mass painting exercise. Of note, when we experimented using the range finders and various optics at different ranges as to whether this pattern was any more effective than the standard pattern, at least our observations was that it was not. Plus after a day or two in the field, the dust and / or mud just blended everything. Interesting experiment, however. The foto is part of an arrival sequence at Camp Lee, hence no MOPP gear.
