1976 - 1978 | John Skirmont | Picture shows how a TPT (Target, Practice, Tracer) round was packed in the metal shipping containers. Notice the rubber boot around the rear of the round. Because M551 rounds were fired using an electrical charge in the breach instead of a conventional firing pin, this rubber boot prevented static electricity from igniting the round. | 1005 | 1976 - 1978 | John Skirmont | A view of OP Sierra. For 24 hours at a time, this was home to the troops assigned to monitor the activities of the Meiningen Gap sector of the East/West German border. East Germany is in the background. | 2/OPS_jpg_jpg.jpg | |
1976 - 1978 | John Skirmont | I was lucky enough to catch this Sheridan firing while on the move. Being a former Sheridan driver myself, I can tell you that there is a great deal of coordination required between the driver and gunner, as it was imperative that the driver keep the track moving very smooth and steady less the gunner miss the shot. Another very interesting thing about this photo is that the M551 is firing over the side. We tried to avoid this practice, as turret screens came loose and even cupola bolts sheared off as a result of the massive recoil. | 2/NightFire03_jpg_jpg.jpg | |

1976 - 1978 | John Skirmont | Sheridans night firing from a stationary position on the firing line. The driver didn't have much to do here, and sometimes even caught up on some much needed sleep. Yes, we drivers did actually get used to the recoil enough to snooze! | 2/NightFire01_jpg_jpg.jpg | |

1990 | Johnson, Chris | This picture comes with a short story. It was taken on 3 October 1990 in the former East Germany. I am standing on the right and Andrew Frosch (of Vermont) is the other person. During my three years with the Cav we often times did maneuver exercises on the economy and the German kids would hold up two fingers in the Victory or Peace sign depending on your interpretation. With the fall of East Germany, we felt it was appropriate to add the third finger. | reunify.jpg | |

2003 | Daley / Bad Kissingen | Other | Norbert Ruckel | Here is an unidentified building that once was part of Daley Barracks Community. It is located on Bahnhof Strasse, not too far from the BOQ and rail station. If anyone remembers this structure and its use, please contact web master. OBTW, it is not the MP Station; that building can clearly be seen in Image # 615. Update - Provided by Doug Barrett Regarding the above mentioned photo on Banhof Strasse on Daley Kaserne. That building was actually over behind the post office and 'grocery store'. It had three primary uses as I recall. One, it housed the Headstart program for 'newbies'. Secondly it was used as a classroom for college classes conducted by Boston College (trust me...I took classes there) but.....the best use? It was the BK stereo store for us hard rocking American G.I.'s. I still have the stereo that I purchased from there. It was a very small store and you still had to go to Schweinfurt for the big ticket items. . You know... that building was the most unknown on site. I was in B-10-E from 82-83 and I think that I was the only in B-10-E that really knew that there was something in there besides headstart. I have hundred of pics from BK. Even the Wienerwald and the pizza (Saalbau) joint down by the polizei station in downtown BK. | 1/apr0203_Dly27.jpg

2003 | Daley/ Reiterswiesen | Other | Norbert Ruckel | In this foto, we look across the interior of the site. Clearly some demolition has occurred. The towers are gone and seemingly other structures although I can't recall the specifics. The QRS, when first opened, was guarded by contract security guards from the local economy. I think our responsibility was to have one NCO at he guard house with the German commander and two surprise visits nightly by the Eaglehorse Staff Duty Officer. | mar1903_qrs2.jpg
2003 | Daley | Other | Norbert Ruckel | Site of the former chapel. The shubs remain, building gone. The stone marker with plaque was placed in that area. The marker was moved to the BK Building Inspection Office when the chapel was razed. | mar2303_Dly16.jpg
2003 | Daley/ Reiterswiesen | Other | Norbert Ruckel | Continuing through the LTA, an older ASP, however, I don't recall this as the one the Eaglehorse used prior to the QRS. Perhaps it was used by the HAWK Battery or the 2 - 41 FA, although I thought this latter unit stored CL V at Rottershausen ASP, just SE of Bad Kissingen. If anyone recognises the area and can help tell the story, please contact webmaster. | mar1903_msty3.jpg

2003 | Daley/ Reiterswiesen | Other | Norbert Ruckel | Some mystery fotos from the LTA. As an LT, I was to this area just once, and I recall it as a wash rack. The story was that once the " new " wash rack above ( behind ) squadron maintenance was built, this one, located in the LTA was no longer used. Can anyone help tell this story? | mar1903_msty1.jpg
2003 | Daley/ Reiterswiesen | Other | Norbert Ruckel | The surrounding security double fence at the QRS. Much remains of this feature and a few things are gone. Interestingly, further demolition is not planned. The area is designated as a nature preserve and it is now very difficult for further changes to occur. If anyone can help tell the story of the QRS, please contact webmaster. | mar1903_qrs6.jpg
2003 | Daley/ Reiterswiesen | Other | Norbert Ruckel | Interior view of bunker. Lieutenants were tasked to inventroy all or parts of the CL V in storage to insure lot number and count accountablity. I believe the Support Platoon Leader had actual property accountability. As lots were condemned or became " suspect " by the Army wide CL V management system, an officer was tasked to locate and move the ammunition to a " segregation bunker " until the issue was resolved. | mar1903_qrs5.jpg

2003 | Daley/ Reiterswiesen | Other | Norbert Ruckel | However, much remains at the QRS. Seen here, the view into the berm surrounded area with the individual ammo vaults remaining. The SDO, upon making his visits to the QRS, would physically walk the interior area and inspect the towers. Everything was bathed in the orange light of sodium vapor lamps. | mar1903_qrs3.jpg

2003 | Daley/ Reiterswiesen | Other | Norbert Ruckel | Norbert continues the foto safari in the LTA. The Quick Reaction Site ( QRS ) opened in 1980 and replaced the old ASP also found in Reiterswiesen. The site offered many advantages including ammo bunkers earmarked to individual vehicle pairs and an elevated site allowing ammo to be loaded " down and in " to the vehicles as they parked. The entire site was surrounded by large berms. This building I believe was the central guard house. | mar1903_qrs1.jpg
2003 | Daley/ Reitersresen | Other | Norbert Ruckel | In the down range area, one of many heavy wood structures with remains of electric hook ups inclosed. The bunker is about one meter high. | mar1903_mini3.jpg

2003 | Daley/ Reitersresen | Other | Norbert Ruckel | Some of the features are difficult to place; Norbert believes that this is the mini tank range as seen looking up range. There was clearly a control area at one end, berms along the sides and a thick wood wall backstop down range. Can anyone provide additional information? | mar1903_mini1.jpg

2003 | Daley/ Reiterswiesen | Other | Norbert Ruckel | A good view of the " down load " design of the QRS. During my period in squadron, the tanks often were to the QRS to remove portions of the basic load to make space for training ammunition used at gunnery. At least once or twice per year, the entire squadron went to the QRS during a monthly alert to insure that crews understood how the system worked and the location of their particular bunker. | mar1903_qrs4.jpg
