Just thought I'd check in and have thought about getting a bunch of us together. Maybe Vegas with Cosmo. Another thought down from camp wolbalc/lee was a club called the titanic. When they made it off limits I hid In the shitter and Peter the bartender saved my ass when the mp's raided it. Makes me wonder what I'd have become if caught , put on msg macains rockpile and kicked out. I plan to go back and smoke one more bowl. Nelle 2188790129

Doing another quick posting to get my e-mail address here as well. Forgot to mention LTC Alan has signed in also. Was Squadron Commander while I was there. Good Commander. Also he recognized my wife for the volunteer work she did and for organizing the Young Wives Club. Made a difference for a lot of wives. Remember officer wives even joined. They took a lot of trips and tours and LTC Allan gave them full support.

Was the best unit I was in during my 8 years in the U.S. Army. Lot of good memories and good people. Have been looking at photos and stories that are posted. I see Oscar Gill has sign in. Is that the same First Sergeant Gill that replaced First Sergeant Dunham in Echo Troop. I was taking a break from the line platoons for awhile in the orderly room as Morning Report Clerk at the time. Went back to 3d platoon when First Sergeant Gill came in. Nothing personal, was just ready to go back on the line. They were in the process of trading in their 114's for Sheridans when I got there. Went to Vilseck with the rest of them for transition training on the Sheridan and drew all brand new or rebuild Sheridans. Remembering a lot of names and would like to hear from anyone that remembers me or thinks they might. Will check back once-in-a-while to see if anything pops up.

I was a Major in 1976 in Command & Control Sqd. and XO to LTC John Votaw. Col Ballantyne was the Regimental Commander and followed by Col Butch Saint. We had a great unit, well trained and disciplined. The Soviets never came (in my opinion)because we were well trained.

Now as time has passed I look back at those years in BK and going to the field with you all and know it was some of the best times in my life. It makes one try to enjoy each moment as they live it, because it might be another one of those best times. Allons My Brothers

Very interesting and most comprehensive review of life at the border and in BK. I recall a very active site behind the BOQ's for gliders. Also the great food found at Ulrich's restaurant outside of BK. There was a reunion several years ago, from our tour time...things had changed. So it's fun to see the sights of the past.

RAD Lagertor Fladungen Hello everybody, I am a citizen of Bischofsheim near Fladungen and would like to inform you: rad10 does not show the dining building but the “Siebertshof”, which was erected in 1938 and still exists (now called “Rhönhof”), 1km southeast of the camp. rad30 and rad31 show The “Ehrenmal” (cenotaph) at the top of the Heidelstein mountain, 8km south of the camp, now the site of a TV broadcast station. Matthias Poppe PS: There is a brochure of Helmut Petzold “Das Lagertor in der Hoch-Rhön” of 1982 (?) in my possession. It contains a plan of the camp as well as photographs and several reports of former RAD members.

Jesse and I were just recounting some old tales of 2/11 ACR today while filling out our daughter scholarship application. I have to say that the 2 years I spent in BK and Wildflecken were the best of times. It's very neat to be able to look here and see some of the places I went and hear other's stories and experiences. THanks for all you do here.

Wow, this site really brings back memories. The story about Norton getting lost at the Oktoberfest, see "A Wife's Memories". The more I think about it, I can almost hear him telling us of his adventure getting home. We volunteered to stay behind and find him...but our CO probably figured we'd just end up back in the beer tent. Of course we would have...after we found Norton. I still have my inflatable beer mug. Brost! Then the border, watching them tear down the dog houses, the snowman on top of OP Tennessee, and the list goes on. The troop trip to Spain...what a blast. Skiing the Alps...thanks for the lessons Manning. A week in Italy...ah yes...Bud Lights on the beach with my buddy Neeley and a couple American women who were on a European tour and thrilled to have American "wasser" beer. The Kreuzberg monastery, again more beer. How about the Friday morning runs out the back gate. We had no idea when we would return. One of my most memorable moments was shooting a perfect 40/40 at the M16 range with my good buddy Toke spotting for me. Earned a Squadron coin that day. I think Top was proud of his driver. I could go on and on about Toke...otherwise known as Greg Tokaya. We were in basic together, roommates in BK and went to Ft. Lewis together. The Army was not a career option for me, but it has a lot to do with who I am today. Germany and guarding the border was so different than stateside. Many good times that I will never forget. Some bad times that I would like to forget. And life goes on…

Assigned to Squadron Maintenance HHT and later to Howitzer Battery motor pool. Deployed to SWA with the squadron and survived the DOHA Fires. 2/11/Eagle Horse is/was unlike any other organization before or since. You worked harder and you partied harder, but you always felt part of an organization with a proud history. Anywhere you went regardless of the rank on your collar, soldiers and civilians knew the caliber of soldier a Black Horse trooper was - first rate. Two soldiers under my charge I specially remember, CPL Roane and SGT Javon White from Squadron Maintenance. I am honored to have been a Black Horse trooper and carry this pride with me everywhere I go to this day. In SWA, a big bump on the road known as the DOHA Fires left an infinite though sad memory, but we survived and instinctively continued to be troopers, regardless of this unfortunate incident. We took a blow no doubt, but we knew that our pride was the most important thing to salvage. And sticking to our motto, "Allons" (Lets Go), we went on and cleaned up the mess left behind by the fires. We licked our wounds and drew strength from each other. Long live the 11th ACR! Allons!

The Eagle Horse squadron was my first assignment in the army. I am proud to have served in a real army unit, there is nothing else like the Black Horse Regiment, hard core!! Swain was the 1SG and Logan, Haskinson, Smith, White, Allen worked in the S-1 PAC with me and everybody in every section of HHC would get together and drink beer and party from the time we got off work til early in the morning. We ran it off every morning and was bright eyed for the rest of the day. Can't do that now. Great times. I would love to hear from everybody I served with, we were family and some of the best Soldiers this country ever had. I will always remember my fellow Soldiers from the Eagle Horse Squadron, it is such an honor to have served and be affiliated with you. The Black Horse has always been my favorite patch by far.

Visited BK about 4 years ago. What a change. The whole place has been transformed into a civilian area. Schools, police station, K-mart type of store and housing. The barracks are now gone but the gate is still intact. Stayed at a Guest house on the other side of the river and walked downtown(in the frigin rain). Don't know if any of you remember the currywurst and pomfrits next to the church downtown, but still there, yum. As most of you suggest most of my time there was fun, beerfests, winefest, faschung, skiing, exploring(travel) and did I say beer. Ended up marrying a Dutch girl and still married, really. Would love to hear from you as my memory is fast approaching terrible.

Arrived in June 1974. Donand M. Biggin was the 1SG. Dean Babcock the troop clerk. I was a mortarman. First thing the 1SG asked me was if I could type. When I said yes he sat me down in front of a typewriter and had me type a letter. From that day on I was the unit clerk until they formed the PAC as squadron HQ. Memorable people were 1SG Oshersky, CPT Rollins, CPT Anker, CPT Bush (he was a 2LT when I arrived, West Pointer, I believe), 1SG Tiamala, SFC Stiggers (met him in Fort Bliss years later and he was a MSG then, still in the cav)and 1LT Quimby. Others I remember were Duckworth, Kish, Herrera (Crazy Horse), Blevins (never had his own cigarettes), McMullen, Blea, Tallman, Oster. I can remember others faces but not their names. Left there in January 2007 and transferred to A Troop, 1st Squadron in Fulda as a mortarman, my squad won the Regimental top gun at the competition that year.

Good stuff blood! I was M551 crewman and even had the mos 11E20R8. Did border duty 2 or 3 times out of Bad Hersfeld when you fellows would be at Graf.Found this site while researching info for story I was writing about a war that never happened. Wrote it mostly for some old army buddies and I used some of y'alls pictures for illustrations. Don't agree with all your conclussions on the old gal, but you really did a outstanding job. I used GI bill for Flt. training and ended up as a pilot for AA. Flew with Air Force Col's and Gen's who always wanted to hear tank stories! Had to set them straight, it was a TRACK, not a tank. Adios amigo, drop a note to me anytime.

I'm from Placerville, CA. not from NC and I was in SSG Forrer's section can't remember what number it was, Driving that M109A1 through those little German towns was priceless, when I got promoted to SGT I was put in charge of Special Weapons Section in 1978 till I left for Ft. Lewis in Feb. of 1979.

I spent many years in the military yet the time in G Troop was the best of them all. Great place if you didn’t have a family or want a social life outside of the field. The tank or border camp was home and the platoon was family. Beer was plentiful wherever you went from the beer hall at Lee to the kid bringing it up from town. Unlike other places in Germany the locals liked us. Pulling up next to a house at 2 AM. Little old grandma turning on the light looking outside to see you there. The next thing you knew a tray of coffee was on the front deck for you. When the sun came up so did breakfast. Her son came in from town and said she loved us and was very grateful we where not the Russians. The people of the border really knew why we where there. If anyone can find it, I know there is video of Camp Lee out there. One of the primetime news companies did a special and we where the focus of it while doing a border tour. It was filmed Jan or Feb of 87 and aired the summer of 1987. I still catch glimpses of the footage when I see videos of M1 tanks. They went out and filmed my tank (G41) and a Bradley in the field just north/east of Lee (winter). They had full Camp Video and interviews of people in the beer hall and the berrecks. I will never forget those days!

I went on and retired as CSM of 1-64 Armor in Ft Stewart in 1997. My proudest and most favorite time in the Army however, was the time I spent in the Blackhorse.   Brings back some great memories, I can't remember all the names but I remember a few, SSGT Surraut had a direct duty assignment but the CAV jerked it right out from under him, he was a good man and commo shop NCO. Ashmead, Austin, Omar Reyes and one other guy that I can't remember...Blair maybe. The guys in the motorpool, wheeled mech and turret,I see the faces and I have pics from REFORGER 85 but the names escape me. Our XO who lead us into a Mech Inf Battalion with me driving the M577 and since I was closet I had to talk to the umpires. We were all wiped out, the entire convoy of mechs and comm shop...good times. Making Supro Numro on guard mount and missing making the man because I dropped my hat when the Lt said "Gas, Gas, Gas". I remember walking that motorpool in the cold winter night when I didn't make anything. Stephen Perry I remember too, saw his name on the guest book. I have my Border Certificate framed and on the wall...."Pray for War", threat briefings, OP TN and the LA Chargers Cheerleaders up at the border camp. Eaglehorse beer, still have the label. The best of times doing a real world mission during the Cold War with the best of people. I remember these times as much as I remember Desert Shield/Storm/Calm, the greatest people in the world serve in the US military. Thank you all for you service and sacrifice.

Just wanted to say Hello to all those out there who served with me. I think about Bad Kissingen and all the great memories quite often. I thought that 2 1/2 years over there would never end, but I'd give anything to be able to go back in time and do it again. It was a really neat place to serve. I met some great people, saw some great places. I was a crewman on track # G-34. I was in 3rd Platoon. Sgt Ski was my plt. sgt. GREAT MAN!!!!! I would have marched through HELL with him. I have never met another great leader as he....Thank's for this website. Please keep it going. Thank's for all the memories guy's. Take care, and may GOD BLESS !!!! SP/4 Elmer C. Mason.. ALLONS

Just stumbled across this site. Saw a few names I remember. Hell, a couple are practically neighbors, both live in Kentucky. Ltc. Col. Clarke, Lt Chalkey, SFC Manley, Sgt Fatula, Cpl. Norris (he mentioned Dwight Cox). I remember all of you. I was with Fox Troop, can't recall my first troop commander, Capt. Pete Rose was my second commander. Leon Covington (240-30-1690, "take that to the IG") was my second 1st Sgt and the most memorable. I spent time in both 2nd and 3rd platoons. I was the Fox Troop unit armorer for about a year. Sure do remember spending alot of time up at Camp Lee. That was long ago but I've never forgotten my days there nor my time spent with the Cavalry. Robert Swartz

Wow... I've been pining over the service to my country we did for a long time and then stupid me finds this beautiful site. We were/are brothers in arms in a difficult time in our history and the broad focus we had to do at the border was pulled back in garrison where we could sit around a few beers and contemplate the situation. It was complex, nobody here can deny a brother's view. I want to reach out to some Boeselager team members of the 1985/6 team i can barely remember in a quarter-century! I've been trying to forget for so long because of the pain and sacrifice. I must right this wrong. Pls help me talk to: Christopher Ferdugo Scott Schinaman Billy Tucker David Hernandez Wawrziniak (who shot me in the face!!#^#^$@ fucker)(blanks, but powder burns are burns!) David? Taylor Jimmy Coon are you still married to the German betty? Cpt Ortiz Cpt Martin Sgt Wolborski. Sry, can't remember everybody. I've forgotten all my crewmates I think accidentally but unconciously selectivally for some reason I love you all but there is a mental block now. But I remember the Boeselager... I'm sorry I've been trying to forget but I never will. Can you??? It was as they say in today's recruiting advert, "accelerated Life." They had no idea. get BlackHorsed. Anyhow, 25 years later I am trying to start a book/novel/screenplay/ something because I'm not a writer I'm an ex-killer like all-o-us... Here's my firt chapter. Pls respond and let me know. it's not about the fight, it's an afterlook on what we did. We all had your own reasons for doing this. I am sitting on the beach with a hot betty waiting for me in the trailer!!!%&^$*$% My beautiful wife. So enjoy the first exerpt... I love you all. will sacrifice all again for you any day. ALLONS!!!!! It’s been a long hot day on the beach. It was fun with lots of wakeboarding under the hot sun, and an awesome barbecue is starting over the fire this evening. I relax and stare down into the embers and try to make some sense of things. Nick is doing good at wake boarding and Raegan is swimming like a guppy these days. Since when did I ever get so sore having fun? Must be getting old. I took the fins off my wake board and was doing tricks until I was going flat out with both hands on the handle behind me backwards and clipped a rogue wave on my glass patch and slammed my head into the water. OUCH!! Headache and beers… The steaks were mouthwatering and the company good. Cliff, Carol, Kelly, Mike, Will n Linda, my wife Tina and all the kids kick it around the fire and laugh about Carol dipping the nose of the boat. I was in the water after that crash with Carol driving, and she double-dipped the nose of the boat through the wake. 6 inches of water go sluicing down the middle of the boat, catching everyone offguard. 12 people all jump up yelling and screaming! Hilarious to watch! I’m squinting at them bobbing in the water with a semi-concussion, perplexed as to what was going on until they pulled alongside. Everything was okay, just some wet carpet and the bilge pump took care of it but it was about 400 gallons heavy with water. After the barbeque we laugh the good laugh and talk about other things as the light fades into night. The fire burns, and the propane illuminates. We talk about the purpose of the universe, the constellations above, Polaris because if you don’t know which way is North, then you’re lost. The lapping waves on the shore are soothing. The moon rises full on tonight and is beautiful as the landscape. Music plays in the background as eventually everyone fades away, I’m kind of an insomniac and am usually the last one awake. Eventually my buddy Cliff says ”See you in the morning George.” “Later Bud. Bye Carol…” The embers are still hot and glowing drawing my gaze and I start to think how fortunate I am to have a wife like Tina. That’s not always been the case. The crickets are singing their song and it’s so peaceful. I get up and walk over to crank on the generator for the air conditioning on the 5th wheel for the wife and kids. I straighten and stretch my aching back and look at the glowing moon. That’s when I see my truck’s license plate. CAVSCT. Huh… It’s a hot sultry night. CAVSCT. Been awhile since I thought about that. Been trying to forget for so long… It’s been a quarter century since I was in the Army and nearly every time I sit around the campfire I end up thinking about it. CAVSCT stands for the U.S. Army Table of Organization and Equipment (USTO&E) requisition for a Cavalry Scout, 1 each., CAVSCT 130 requisitioned per Troop, in the combat tables for an Armored Cavalry Regiment Platoon. And so I selected this for my personal license plate after I served for the honor of my Country. After checking the generator I sit back down at the fire and start shelling some peanuts into the sand and start thinking about those dark days at the end of the Cold War. Surrounded by the gently lapping waters, the fullness of the moon over the desert and staring into those red embers alone I am eventually drawn back into the past. Darkness pitch black as the darkest night clouds my mind as I fade away to those memories…My forehead wrinkles against my massaging fingers… And so it begins like every time…The embers crack and pop! Lights flash, and I’m on the far side… The summer of 1985… Where do I begin… Much more to come....

Meade, Maryland. After three months I finished my tour and became a civilian again. Ironically twenty years later the 2nd Squadron of the 11th A/C was redeployed to Daley Barracks in Bad Kissingen and occupied the same barracks that I had been in before I transfered to Pinder Barracks in Landshut.

James Blankenship Fox troop second squadron 11th armored Calvary Regiment. From 2/1972 -- 8/1974. Driver of Funny Fever the M113. Just recently found out about eaglehorse.org . Talk only so far with Sheridan gunner 34. Talk a bout bringing back memories I never realized I so many. Lots of fun memories and also sad memories. Sad because so much history is lost. While I would reminiscing the past a thought occurred to me that I want to pass on to the guys I served with . I participated in a ceremony at OP One Zero that you may not know about but did include you. Let me pick up from where we will remember. We are in the infamous 1K zone on alert the commander-in-chief has given the Russians 72 hours to remove certain ships from the Mediterranean or we would. Sink those ships and we'll retake Europe was the reply. Will stop you at Frankfurt. At or about 20 minutes before the 72 hours was up you'll recall the LT told me quit calling in shadow reports we're already at black flag ten. Alpha and bravo squads have disembarked and now as usual in this situation like this I am to put some space between us obvious reasons. I pull out onto the hillside and see something that goes against all my infantry training. To small groups of NCOs and officers standing out in the open. I now have an empty armored personnel carrier and I pull up at OP 10 I'm talking at the shack. There is a major standing there and asking I said Sir where are we going to go? In an angry voice he said what you mean where are we going to go.Son their fixing to obliterate this hillside. I want you to take this prick 77 radio go out there stand. You'll never hear the bullet that killed you,but you will see a puff of smoke when you see that puff of smoke key the mic. That will be a high confirmation that the Russians across the border. But before you do I would like tosay in case I never see you guys again. It is I who am honored to have been your commander. Well we shook hands and then I went to stand in front of the shack. As you recall the 72 hours ran out. We thought we were in the third world war. Then after a brief eternity I heard over the radio from behind me--- they are still having a telephone conversation. Then another brief eternity. From the same radio---the bow of the ship is turning. There is a sigh of relief. Very short. Time. Some officer from the rear shouts prepair for counterattack. This has been a Fox spot report update,---- jamesdi_01@comcast.net 256-381-6871 Camel

Hi I am ex British Army I was interested in the writing about the French Commando Courese by Major M.W. McGehee US Army (Ret) as I did the same course in 1978 with 20 of my solders I was training for 22 SAS and it was a good pre training course. We did the course in Winter in freezing conditions and many of the Troopers who were not ready for it suffered but i was fun. I also made friends with Tic Tic and used to run with him on the nights off. Just wondered if there were any other guy's on this site who did the same course.

When I got to Bad Kissigen, with my little brother in tow, I was asigned to G-troop sgt. Phinices tank.G-25 as a driver, and we had captain Miller/AKA killer Miller/ HIS VIETNAM NAME. The tanks were all green, with big pictures of goffy on them. Then we got Captain Plyer. and LT. Howard Johnson I remember he couldn;t read a map for beans!Totally lost!most the time.got transfred to g-3 in hq. Who would guess that? and got promoted too. Thats when the goffy pictures where painted over by the camo colors, and I was interduced to HASH! LOTS AND LOTS OF HASH!!And became Captain Plyers jeep driver.I was in GRAFINVER 3 times, the last time I drove for Captain Plyer we were in were in Grafinver and went back for the mail, and some big meeting? and when the captain open his door back at the home base, he saw the xo banging his wife on his desk.and slamed the door. the mail cleck said, I may get court marhaled but I an;t missing this one ,and open the door and watched for a wile. and and then I blow out my ear drum, got a 20% disabil- and never saw a dime from that.got reasign to the 54 eng.in the states. But all in all, I hated Germany! It has cold! and does any one remember when we went to wild chicken OOPs Flicken. and they let them cooks shoot a sheraton and they didn't put in the breach ring and blow themselfs up? Got sent to a burn hospital in texas.CRAP FLEW ON THAT ONE!!! Being a jeep driver keeps you up on all the doings.Drove General Deserbry once to the border.Wow! When people say them 3 stars on that jeep they when crazy! It had its moments, but all in all I was glad to see rine main air force base!and germany in my rear view.OH YEA, wille you still owe me 5 bucks chump!

Viewed your website and enjoyed the information. while I was not in your outfit, I did serve on the border 1962-63 out of Wildflecken and Camp Wollback. I was there during the tent city period and did night duty with a ground surviellence team. We used a tripod radar system that was very effective and hunted by the East Germans. We were almost captured twice and experiences live fire over the border on several occassions. They were not aware of our presence during the live fire and we felt it was in response to disturbance in the fence system, possibly escapees from the East. We also witnessed the building of the border fence. It was done at night with crude tools and lanterns. In the daytime they were gone until darkness again. Yes, the tents were cold. My toothbrush stayed frozen in my shaving kit until it was thawed out in the one crude mess hall / shower building on the site. I do have photos if anyone is interested. Those guys were absolutely the best except for SGT Pebbles/Rock. Funny how he only talks about 2nd Plt...Ha! The best thing about the Company was Ron Beach as 1SGT and his insitence that NCO'S run the unit. Our great officers had it made. Guys like JJ Steele and our super LTs like Bruce Potter. I am still in touch with about a third of those great guys. Thanks for the memories. CSM (ret) Bill Hutton

I made a lot of good frinds in HHT like SFC rendall and SGT Lundquest as well as several others. I was give my choice if Troops and chose Fox due to the professionalism of 1SG Swann. I was privledged to serve again under CSM Swann at Bliss after leaving the squadron in 1989. I am sad to say I spoke with him on the phone a few weeks before he passed away due to cancer. I made some good friends. I have memories of going to the AYA with my fiends, hanging out at the movies and bowling alley. I went to 9th grade in Schweinfurt and then 10th, 11th and part of 12th grade in Wurzburg. My dad would have loved this site. He passed away in 1992. His last duty station was Ft. Stewart, Georgia. He retired as an E-7 and was an excellent re-enlistment NCO.

This site has greatly aided me in passing on the stories of my service to my wife and kids. The pictures and stories are the real experiences of young men who did not know the full meaning of their lives but were willing to risk it for a patch of dirt in a country that few of us knew about or even cared about previously. I would like to attend the reunion in 2009 and will make an effort to reTRACE my adventures from that time. The one adventure already redone was a four day pass to Munich and the Oktoberfest in 1979. I celebrated my 18th birthday holding up a beer in salute to the Queen of Bavaria statue from a beer tent. That trip from BK was by train and I slept in my sleeping bag on the fest grounds for 3 nights. In 2000, I went back to Munich for the Oktoberfest, this time staying in a 5-star Kepinkski hotel and driving my brand new Mercedes Benz picked up at the factory in Sindelfingen. Germany was an interesting mix and for me, the ride has only gotten better and better.

It's nice to see some of the names in here Dana Neal, Conrad Cablay, Lt Sommerkamp, CPT Campbell and a bunch more. This was the best assignment I had in my 20 year career with the best Cav troopers in the Army. How about First Sergeant(not Top) Camerron, he was a piece of work, but the best 1SG I ever had. I retired in 1995 after 10 years of recruiting duty. I currently work for the Army as a civilian. I am the S2 for the Cleveland Recruiting Bn. You guessed it- me and another Eagle Horse gunner from G-TRP. Everyone else got to use white light because their xm44 was on "Deadline" LOL. ALLONS!

My time with the CAV was short and I didn't make many friends but the ones I did make, I miss them. Too bad things could not have been different. I served with other CAV units such as 4/7th in Korea and F Troop in Alaska. I my MOS was Tanker but I respected and liked the CAVs' mission. To those of you that used the M 551 I know not many liked the vehicle, but I did and for it's designed use, it would have worked. Good luck to all of you.

Hello gents, my name is SPC Josh Perez, and I'm stationed in Schweinfurt with A co, 2-28 INf. (Formerly 1-26 INF.) I'm looking for a former member of your unit. His name is Eric Patrick Auguest, and he was in F troop in BK between the years of '86 and '89. He's from Minnesota, and his rank at the time was E-4. I only ask, because his daughter, Christina, is a dear friend of mine, and she's been trying to find him for some time now. If anyone has any information about Mr. Auguest, please contact me at Airborne_Munkee509@yahoo.com. Thank you for your time. Strength and Honor, SPC Perez, Joshua A Co, 2-28 IN, 'Black Lions'

Eagles! Wow! Friggin' Hyder! They roomed me with him when I arrived in B.K. We promptly started wrestling over something, can't remember what. I probably took some of his beer or something. Schinamin, who was your roomie that kept wetting the bed and falling asleep at the "T bar" during road marches? I hung with Jeff Souders, Ed Hurley, Steve Perry( Steve- you were gonna be a writer, how'd that work out?),Mike Hunt, etc. I had forgotten all about the "cold starts". And how about the "alerts". I was the only one of my crew who lived on base and had to haul all the crew serve weapons up that friggin' icy hill. Still can't believe the Army let a bunch of 18-20 yr olds have access to uploaded M1s. I kept thinking that sooner or later some drunk kid would climb in one night and start lobbing some Sabot or Heat rounds into town. What about Area Mud? And I remember that barkeep and his mail order bride. That poor girl couldn't speak German or English. I was lucky enough to have served in time of peace. God bless to any active soldier reading this, and know that when you are out there in the dark and cold, and your tank's heater is out, there are people thinking of you and wishing you well.

Spent a very short time with 11th ACR due to the deactivation of the Regiment. In that short time, I served with some excellent troopers, NCO's and Officers. Wildflicken turned out to be my best overseas assignment in my 2o years in the Army. You could usually find me in the bowling alley during lunch and on Friday nights. Didn't have much time to take photos so I don't have any to offer to this site. Would love to hear from those who were there with me.

(3/2/2008) I have been out of the service 31 years this April. The 2/11th was my last duty station prior to ETS. Just dropped by after receiving a note from LT Bob S. I saw new pictures from Tommy Quinn, and it was cool to see names attached to pictures. I saw a couple of pictures that Tom had: (one with SGT Parke in it (QNO69), one or two with the red head who always had a mouthful of chew from Montana who only changed his shorts once a week (QNO 69). Kenny Ward and I traveled to Duisburg Germany in July 1976 as I headed back to the USA to see my family. We had a great time there partying with the British Soldiers. Charles P. Cox, Mark Roeper and me roomed together while I was assigned to 2nd PLT. Cosby was our loader on the PLT SSG's tank. Cosby's running buddies were (PFC Koral) and a little guy who were in the pictures Tom has. I also noted that in the pictures that I had submitted, that I spelled SGT Jack Crouch incorrectly. I left the "R" out of Crouch. I have heard from Mark Federici, and Jorge Alverez in Texas. Hope all is well with everyone ..... God Bless! 'Cuda

Really appreciate and enjoy these photos of Daley barracks 1972-1974, you guys have done a tremendous job of organizing this - thanks!

This is something else, looking back at Daley Barracks and Bad Kissingen. I was there at the end of the BK era. As a short-timer, they left me and a few others behind when they moved up to Wildflecken. We cleaned out the barracks, dug up oil spots and removed whatever sigs of American troop presence we could. A very strange time. It was a beautiful place to be posted.

From one your fellow solders from across the field, how can I forget you crazy bastards! Sheridan tanks to M60s you lived in the field and played hard in garrison. I fondly remember riding in the recently restored WWII half track, remember. It had to be better to ride in a tank than a lousy Gama Goat. I discovered what happened to BK Barracks by looking it up in Google Earth, the place was wiped off the map. You site gave an excellent history of the place. Can’t say I miss it much, BK was not a town for a young GI. Keep up the good work!

Oh I have a few corrections to make from my memoirs. First - LTC Carlson was the Arty Batallion Commander I was first assigned to in Giessen FRG who I visited at the Naval War College along with Maj Skidmore in Newport Rhode Island. I only served under LTC Conrad and LTC Sturbois while at 2/11 ACR. Second -Although CPT Marcalto and I were friends it was LT Ted Cheatham and I who would go on road trips thru the Bavarian country side. Great times. Sorry for the confusion but as I'm getting older I'm developing a case of (CRSA) CANT REMEMBER SHIT CORRECTLY - atleast the first time around. haha!

Thanks for a great site. I think I enjoyed looking through the names in the guest book most of all. Good to see Becker, Dr. Duncan, and Westover in there. (I'd love to know what SGT Dick is up to these days.) We had a great reunion last year in Vegas, even attended by COL Gunz. Thanks again for keeping this site up and running.

OK I've had some time to think and now I'm gonna run a few names and memories while I served with in S-3. When I arrived Capt. Mills was the S-3, Lloyd Mues was the Asst. S-3, MSG. Hovis was the OPS Sgt. Lt. Greenhalge was there he would call me the resident civilian. I think it was because I was always the rear detachment for the squadron when everyone went to Wildflicken or Graffenwoehr. The only time I spent at either place was a total of 5 days while stationed at 2/11 ACR. I think the reason for that was on the very 1st Wildflecken Lt Greenhalge was in charge of the ranges and I being the Ops Asst he had me driving him. So on a night training range with one of the tank units we were to follow them down the range as they drove down the range doing a live fire training exercise. So the training started and Greenhalge says "Go Sgt "C" Go". Now this is black out driving with no moon out that night. But for the Grace of God I hesitated and a hugh tank just misses sideswiping us. It was also raining, cold and well ya know. So off we go chasing the tanks. Now I don't remember who was in the other jeep (Mues, Cozzens, or Neal could have even been Randy Mitchell I just can't remember) but they managed to get in front of us. Not 300 feet down range and as I'm cresting the nole slowly. much to the dismay of my sidekick, and start sliding into this deeeeeep black pit we here voices screeming "STOP STOP". As we slowly slid up against them. Here were these 2 poor GI's and jeep bathing in a pool of mud and very cold water. I remember saying aren't you happy I took my time LT we didn't get smushed or take a bath out here. After that I became rear detachment. Oh but I did go to the REFORGER. That little camping trip was a unique experience. I remember asking when we would finally find that Holiday Inn and bitched every time we passed a german resteraunt. Sgt Wilson (made great ribs and had a great family) did all the art work for training. MSG. Martinez & MSG. Greene ran the training aids department in the attic of G Troops building and Msgt. Woolover ran the local firing range. LTC. Carlson was the Sqdn Cmdr & MAJ. Skidmore was the Sqdn Exec. Officer. Maj. Tartella was HHT commander and MSG. Paul Rainy with 1st Sgt. SSgt Traud, Sgt Chris Boehm, PFC Anderson and PFC George Elvington were part of S-3. CPT. Dittmer F Troop Cdr and then S-1 and his small theatre group of actors who would travel the globe to act. WOW that was fun. I remember staying at some Army Doctors house after a show in Schweinfurt. And his wedding was the event of the season. LT Cozzens I remember well and CPT Kerr who later went to V Corps. And LT. Mues left for How Btry and CPT Mercalto arrived I think I picked him up at Frankfurt (not sure as I being rear detachment picked up and delivered so many newbie officers. He had a nice Toyota and we'd tour the country side and talk about the real world aka NYC and I Maine and New Hampshire and my families shoe factory. Oh and I won't forget Neal, Wittig, and Mathis. I also served under LTC Conrad and LTC Sturbois. SMSG Rainey became OPS Sgt and someother CPT became S-3. In February 81 I came back to the states to take over the shoe factory as my dad was quite ill. Just a month after arriving home I got a call from SMSG Rainey ordering me to come back. He missed my organizational skills and efficiency. Lord knows right about then had I not been in over my head with the running of a factory employing 800 people I would have chartered a private jet to run back to a group of people and place I truely loved, missed and cared about. A few years after taking the business affairs over I sold it to a very large holding company who moved the entire factory south of the border. They made me an offer I couldn't refuse which was also in the best interest of the family and the economic times for manufacturing was changing rapidly and I sold just at the right time. I did manage to see LTC Carlson and MAJ Skidmore in Newport Rhode Island at the Naval War College shortly after returning stateside and taking over the business. After Paul Rainey retired I heard from him again proudly telling me that he was in college and was divorced and things were great. Not a year after that call his sister wrote me telling me he passed away from a heart attack. As a leader Paul always knew his troops. One day he came into my cage in the S-3 office and said SGT "C" I need you to come with me to look for dogs. I said OK but we gotta get back here soon cause I've got too many projects to get done. I had no ideal what he was talking about but he ordered me to get out of my cage. He recognized that my stress level was at a 50 on a scale of 1-10. We had just completed re-doing the entire GDP inorder not to fail the AGI. Well by the end of that road trip around the german country side (looking for dogs HAHA) and after stopping at just about every little german watering hole I swear I was fluent in German. Didn't remember a word of german the next day AND DIDN'T PET EVEN ONE DOG but I did remember having deep conversations in the native toung with our german friends we made on that day trip. If I could only remember what we talked about I would get a german translater to find out what the hell I said. God Bless Him. OK to all those I've named please email me and let me know how you are and if anyone knows or have hear from Lake Rider Jr. I think he was in F or G Troop. Give him my email address. As for my up to date life after the sale of the business I worked for Liberty Mutual Insurance for 4 years then a paper company for 5 years 'til they sold in 1991 where traveled as their customer service/product services rep. all over the world. Then went into advertising for about 10 years. That career took me to live in Rhode Island then Vegas and now I'm back in my home state of Maine with my remaining family members and work for a fast growing international bank as a loan and foreign currency officer. Life has been very full and interesting. But it will never measure up to my time with Eagle Horse Squadron.

I spent some time at Camp Lee around 1977-78 as TDY with 1st Cav at Wildflecken. Border patrol in 2 jeeps. A very interesting experience. I was infantry. Very nostalgic for me, as my father was in area in WWII with 94th Cavalry Recon Squadron with 14th Armored Division. Best wishes, and prayers, for everyone.

My Dad was assigned to the 534th during the 1st part of his AIT in late 1956. He was transferred out of the unit due to significant hearing loss. I'm trying to find out if anyone knows if 524th records from that period are still maintained (his records were destroyed in the St Louis fire). Can anyone help?
