Concrete Wall
When either the Hinterland fence or the
barrier fence passed through an East German town, rather than using the
standard fence materials, a concrete wall reinforced with metal plates
was used. This was because the town streets and population were more
difficult to observe and control by the Border Troops. The wall was
strong enough to withstand the impact of any civilian car or truck
authorized in or near the security zone.
